dearest dalaga

Dalaga is a recent discovery and favorite of mine. I first read about the shop a few months ago on Refinery 29's site in an interview with Au Revoir Simone. When those stylin' ladies mentioned it was one of their favorites, naturally I shut down my computer, proudly marched out of my cubicle and hopped on the G train. It was everything I had dreamed and suprisingly affordable. Right now Dalaga is having a lovely Valentine sale (chalk full of champagne when you walk in the door) now till the 17th!

Interview with Breanne ~ Horizons

The other night I had a chat with the lovely Breanne at Horizon's in Williamsburg. Seriously, the girl could not be sweeter and more gracious towards her costumers. I discovered the darling vintage shop early last year while strolling along Metropolitan Ave. It might have been the sunny shade of peach colored walls or the marvelous sale rack glistening outside that forced me to dash towards the entrance. I praise any vintage shop that is organized by color and conveys a specific style, otherwise I sort of end up a distraught mess. It also doesn't hurt that Horizon's clothes are always well made and reasonably priced.
We decided to have a mini photoshoot and talk.

Where did you grow up and what was your childhood ambition?
Fairfax county, Virginia. Disney animator.

When did you decide to open up a shop and what was the process like?
Aug of 07' I saw the shop on the night they put up the rent sign.
The next day I called to inquire and they took me seriously. I just signed the lease and figured
out the next steps as I went along. That's sometimes the only way to move ahead. Say you can and then make it happen.

Sounds like it was meant to be! Were you selling vintage clothes anywhere else before that?
Yes, for six years I was selling at different flea markets around the city.

Where do you hunt for good vintage finds? What do you look for specifically?
Virginia, Maryland, New York,
Connecticut, Florida. I want wearable things made with natural fabrics like silk, wool and cotton. Sometimes I pick over-the-top costume pieces just for display in the store and I don't really care if they sell.

How would you describe the overall theme for your shop/style of the clothes in your shop? etc...
The styles range from the 60's to the 90's. My goal is to have pieces that are cut well and have subtle details. I guess the theme is psychotic positivity and denial. That's fashion. Right?


Right! What's your favorite thing to do while at work?
Watching netflix and getting into long conversations
with strangers.

Whats the next movie on your que?
Stanley Kubrick: a life in pictures. I highly suggest the last thing I saw. The Eccentricities of a Nightingale.

Any weird costumers?
I had a guy give me a poem last
week. -Reflections of a Man Behind the Spine of a Woman....
whatever.

I think I have that poem!...seriously. Who are some of your favorite artists? (Designers/music/visual artists)
Pressure! I like flat shapes so I will say Frank Stella and this lady Mary Blair who designed the small world ride at Disneyland.

What are your dreams and goals for the next year?
pay off some of the debt.

Any tips for young shop owners or people wanting to open a boutique?
Know what you're selling. Ask yourself if
you would wear it. Keep the store way cleaner than your
house! Have the deposit in cash.
