{Mexico Stories ~ Part. 2}

DF - El Patio 77

DF

I was so impressed with the places my boyfriend and I decided to stay in Mexico City. Our first night was spent in the quiet, somewhat bourgeois neighborhood of Condesa at the Red Tree House. This B&B was unlike any I had been to before, complete with treehouse-like bungalowes piled atop one another surrounding a lush and vibrant courtyard. I was inspired by the staff's enthusiasm for their country and their recommendations for must-eats, including sticky nopales. The home was rich with red hues and mornings were topped with homemade Chilequiles (which I have successfully made at home!) and cafe con leche.

The pictures above are from the interior of El Patio 77, where Jon and I had the pleasure of staying during the last leg of our trip. The 19th century townhouse, completely renovated into the first-ever eco B&B in DF was located in a more modest part of the city, San Rafael, and was absolutely stunning. I could have sunbathed in the natural light that filled this place all day had there not been such a magical city to explore otherwise. Using a graywater system that reuses sink and shower water to flush toilets, homemade biodegradable bath products, rooftop solar water heaters and LED lights are just a few ingenious and necessary efforts the owners make to set their B&B in a league of its own. I especially liked the fruit basket left for us outside our door before our early morning departure.

{Mexico Stories ~ Part 1}

bath time

boyfriend on the rocks

In no particular order, I'm going to start posting pictures from my travels down in spectacular Mexico! Yes, it's time for me to dig through them and tempt you with all the colors and delicious feasts Mexico has to offer. It's no surprise to me that I'm really missing the hot jacuzzi-like waters of Oaxaca's beaches, especially now that a stark winter wonderland has settled over NYC.

My boyfriend and I took an epic 8-hour local bus ride up, down and around the mountains and villages of Oaxaca before reaching our beach side bungalow in the teensy fisherman's village, San Agustanillo. A bit naive, the two of us thought taking a bus to see a bit of Oaxaca state, would be more interesting than taking a 25min plane ride to the coast. And it was, sans the speed bumps, narrow loop-de-loop route, human to window tossing induced by sharp turns, horse crossings, blinding fog, blinding night, bouts of nausea, 8 hours of Mariachi inspired mix-tape on repeat and a surprise moment of complete transportation shut down, beside a cliff, overlooking a pit of sheer darkness. With the restarting of the engine seconds later, the indigenous musical tunes giddily carried on, and I continued to hold onto the seat in front of me, shifting my weight to the side of the bus opposite of the cliff's edge for whatever kind of security that could possibly offer me.

But we made it, eventually, and it made us laugh. Kind of.

One day, whilst swimming with sea turtles (for reals) we were alerted by some locals to venture (and by venture, I mean timidly crawl) down this rocky cliff where we could basically present ourselves to be swallowed by a steamy, bubbling magical bath. I've been trying to recreate the experience in my bathtub ever since, alas, my ceiling is only 9ft high, and, you know, it's indoors, in Brooklyn.

Could you imagine having a place like this nearby to escape to whenever you wanted to lounge around in some blue water and read a book?

Yea, I can't either.

{celia rowlson-hall for keller}

I'm continually stunned by the directorial work of my dear lady-friend Celia Rowlson-Hall. Her personal short films are bewitching with an underlying eeriness that is ever-present.

Her latest short film is for Keller; a New York-based designer of some very sharp shoes. The film is so gorgeous, as is Celia, star of her own colorful masterpiece.

Celia and I met during the shoot for my Fall10 video. Yes, she is the pretty dancing lady who performs some very quick outfit changes!

We are currently in the midst of planning my next collection video, which she will direct for Fall2011.
