The adorable symbol for ghost towns on the official Montana highway map is a teensy crooked house and they are sprinkled throughout the glorious counties of Big Sky Country. Our many miles of driving on wide open roads were often interrupted by spontaneous detours to abandoned mining towns and hot spring spas. While some towns resembled old western movie sets, others were too eerie to observe for too long. It was fascinating!

I absolutely ADORE these pictures! Looks like such a beautiful place.
I've spent time in MT and still have close ties there. These pictures are gorgeous and do a great job capturing the vastness of the landscape, and the beautiful haunting way the light can play off the prairie.
But, I disagree - there is nothing eerie about these tiny isolated towns nor the abandoned ghost towns. To me, this is a much forgotten picture of America. People living on the East Coast (me, now one of them) can so easily forget that this expanse currently exists. And has existed. And that people lived and died, and still do, to make a life in such a harsh but heavenly environment.
That first photo is amazing. I love how the tan hat just looks like it's floating in mid-air at first glance, and is the only thing in the photo that color.
